Linda Hanna, 25, articulate and lively, teaches French in a Hassidic school where some students can't pay their tuition and lunch is served to those who haven't enough to eat at home. Working with the newsletter of the Quebec Women's Network puts her in touch with women who are humiliated and deprived, because they are poor. She worries bottom line economics will increase suffering, and when she hears about the protest at a film screening, she decides to go. "We live in asociety where we can afford to protest," says Linda, whose family is from Egypt. "Where I come from, protesters are tortured and mutilated. The least we can do is make a stand." Still, Linda will vacillate about her participation in the blockade. She will be the last one to decide. |
