I went to see Garry Beitel<\/a>\u2019s film The Socalled Movie<\/em><\/a> <\/strong>when it premiered in Montreal a few days ago. A terrific evening: great film, great audience,<\/strong> all very Montreal. The post-screening Q & A was followed by a concert by the film\u2019s main character, musician Socalled<\/a> (aka Josh Dolgin<\/a>) with his band. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Socalled is a truly original creator of hard-to-classify music<\/a> which (to borrow a few lines from the press release) mashes up funk and hip-hop with Jewish klezmer. \u201cSocalled is a pianist, singer, arranger, rapper, producer and composer \u2013 and also a magician, filmmaker and visual artist<\/a> \u2013 a creative force who blasts through the boundaries that separate music of different cultures, eras and generations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Josh is funny, creative, touching, and unstoppable<\/strong>. Garry Beitel sees the star of his film as having \u201can amazing ability to take great music from the past and plug it into the current moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Socalled Movie<\/strong><\/em> is structured in neat little chapters, inspired by Fran\u00e7ois Girard<\/a>\u2019s Thirty-two Short Films About Glenn Gould (1993)<\/a>. In spite of this, the film has real unity and a dramatic arc that really works. During the Q&A, Garry said he felt this approach was appropriate because the main character is such a multi-talented chameleon: \u201cJust when you think you\u2019ve figured out who he is, you discover another dimension which challenges your perception.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Seeing Garry\u2019s film, I had a sense of a filmmaker having reached real maturity. Everything about the film breathes experience and long-standing collaborative relationships<\/strong> \u2013 notably with DOP Marc Gadoury and editor Dominique Sicotte, who both did fantastic work.<\/span><\/p>\n

The film was produced by Barry Lazar<\/a> (reFrame Films<\/a>) and Ravida Din<\/a> (The National Film Board of Canada<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

The Socalled Movie <\/em><\/strong>begins its <\/span>cross-Canada <\/span>theatrical run June 4 \u2013 11 here in Montreal<\/span> <\/span>@ Cin\u00e9ma du Parc <\/a>(3575 Ave. Du Parc), and June 5 \u2013 8 & 10 @ CinemaSpace, Segal Centre<\/a> (5170 Cote-Ste-Catherine). <\/span><\/p>\n

It opens in Quebec City <\/span>June 4 @ Le Clap<\/a> (2360 chemin Sainte-Foy) and plays <\/span>New York City\u2019s NewFest<\/a> <\/span>June 08 @ JCC in Manhattan (334 Amsterdam Avenue.)<\/span><\/p>\n
