From www.defenseindustrydaily.com. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">You are probably familiar with the series <a title=\"YouTube\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_rQ1V7m0Kfs\" target=\"_blank\">7 and Up<\/a> by British filmmaker <a title=\"Screenonline bio\" href=\"http:\/\/www.screenonline.org.uk\/people\/id\/506999\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Apted<\/a>, who has been following fourteen individuals since 1964, filming them every seven years. Well, my colleagues <a title=\"NFB.ca\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/explore-by\/director\/hart-robbie\" target=\"_blank\">Robbie Hart<\/a> and <a title=\"Adobe Productions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adobeproductions.com\/about\/322-robbie-hartrobbie-hart#team?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">Luc C\u00f4t\u00e9<\/a> have done a variation on that idea, with their film <a title=\"Adobe Productions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adobeproductions.com\/about\/322-robbie-hartrobbie-hart#news?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">Turning 32<\/a>. Sixteen years ago they released a series of portraits of 16-year-olds in third world countries. Now, their 16-years-later <a title=\"NFB.ca\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/turning_32_trailer\" target=\"_blank\">feature-length movie<\/a> will play at the <a title=\"AMC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cinemaclock.com\/movies\/que\/Montreal\/40488\/Turning_32.html\" target=\"_blank\">AMC Cinema in Montreal <\/a>Starting Sept. 17th. Going to see docs on the big screen is the best way to ensure they continue to be shown!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">On the heels of <a title=\"Social Doc.net\" href=\"http:\/\/www.socialdoc.net\/magnus\/2010\/09\/07\/waterlife-flows-from-one-medium-to-the-next\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Waterlife flows from one medium to the next<\/strong><\/a>, about the relationship between Kevin McMahon&#8217;s <a title=\"NFB\" href=\"http:\/\/waterlife.nfb.ca\" target=\"_blank\">Waterlife<\/a> online project and his <a title=\"Our Waterlife\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ourwaterlife.com\" target=\"_blank\">film<\/a>, here is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\"> another installment of the interview with Kevin, written by my young colleague <a title=\"Wordpress\" href=\"http:\/\/tobielliottjourno.wordpress.com\" target=\"_blank\">Tobi Elliott<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">Looking forward&#8230; as a filmmaker trying to grapple with new forms of storytelling, what excites you or \u2013 possibly \u2013 depresses you about the possibilities offered by interactive and online documentaries?<\/span><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">Well nothing depresses me about it. In a way, I\u2019ve been waiting for this my whole career. What interests me are environmental questions, questions about the way society works, questions that deal with larger systems. <strong>And it\u2019s always been a challenge to deal with those questions in linear format without falling back on really conventional tropes that I don\u2019t think are particularly successful anymore. <\/strong>**<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">In interactive media, there are still enormous limitations of all kinds, but I think we\u2019re seeing the beginning of something incredibly interesting and exciting. What excites is the possibility of two things: one, creating realistic, virtual environments. The other thing, which <a title=\"NFB\" href=\"http:\/\/waterlife.nfb.ca\" target=\"_blank\">Waterlife<\/a> doesn\u2019t do but which we\u2019ll see more and more in the future, is the possibility of beehive environments that are essentially constructed by the users. Talk to <a title=\"NFB\" href=\"http:\/\/filmmakerinresidence.nfb.ca\/blog\/?page_id=7\" target=\"_blank\">Katerina Cizek<\/a> about that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a title=\"Kevin McMahon by misacsson, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/12509341@N03\/4988096046\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4126\/4988096046_a2668e6d76.jpg\" alt=\"Kevin McMahon\" width=\"248\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">There are two ways you can go: you can construct a large, aesthetic experience, sort of like you do with feature film, or you can construct a beautiful aesthetic experience that is more like a building that users or contributors can come to and build or decorate. Like the NFB&#8217;s <a title=\"NFB\" href=\"http:\/\/highrise.nfb.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Highrise<\/a>, where they\u2019ve built all the &#8216;girders&#8217; in the building and said, \u2018This is what this building can do, but you, the user, are going to contribute this wall, and that user will contribute a window.\u2019 It\u2019s a fascinating experiment. Both those possibilities excite me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">They\u2019re different approaches to basically the same thing, which is <strong>to create not just a two-dimensional thing that the viewer passes and looks at, but rather to create an aesthetic the user can move around in.<\/strong> I find that totally fascinating. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><em> <!--[endif]--><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><em> <!--[endif]--><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">What are you working on right now? <\/span><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">We\u2019re working on a big project right now that&#8217;s only going to be online, called <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">Planet Zero. The subject is nuclear weapons. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">I\u2019ve<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\"> been working on the subject  for thirty years, and have <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">written a book and done two films about it, none of which were satisfactory. I\u2019m hoping that <strong>as  we\u2019re approaching it again as an online project, that maybe we\u2019ll be  able to solve some of the deficiencies of its earlier forms. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">As you\u2019re looking at something  like nuclear weapons, that\u2019s an enormously complex, physical problem.  You\u2019ve got these bombs sitting all over the world. <strong>It\u2019s one of those things that are so big and complicated and hidden, that linear media does a really shitty job of being able to penetrate and convey it.<\/strong> Books, which are non-linear, do try, but they aren\u2019t able to bring any emotional content to the subject. Novels do, but technical books have a real struggle&#8230;. You\u2019re always tossing and turning, trying to find a voice that can express something that\u2019s complicated and realistic, and do it with passion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">With non-linear media, we\u2019re attempting to create this website \u2013 well first of all we\u2019re trying to put the money together to do it \u2013 but <strong>the idea is to recreate an environment as best as we can, with the resources we\u2019ll have, of a nuclear world.<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">In the first iteration, it\u2019ll be like Waterlife the website, and a construction, like a documentary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">So that\u2019s exciting to me, <strong>it\u2019s a new way to approach an old subject in the context where old approaches have not worked very well. <\/strong>Nuclear weapons are something that average folks don\u2019t have much information about, and specialists do.
