I found most of it to be competently done and well-meaning, but extremely predictable and pretty superficial.<\/p>\n<p>This is the curse of television. Just wait till the 10th anniversary of September 11th later this year. Millions of dollars will be spent on reporters and television crews lining up to broadcast from Ground Zero, and I could tell you already what they will say. <strong>Meanwhile, how much coverage is there of <a title=\"IRC.org\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rescue.org\/congo-crisis-glance\" target=\"_blank\">the millions of people who have perished in Congo<\/a> over the last five years?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, for this earthquake anniversary, there were <strong>a few exceptions from the run-of-the-mill. <a title=\"RDI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.radio-canada.ca\/rdi\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Radio-Canada\u2019s news channel RDI <\/a>broadcast a documentary by <a title=\"Radio Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/www.radio-canada.ca\/emissions\/samedi_dimanche\/2010-2011\/chronique.asp?idChronique=130996\" target=\"_blank\">R\u00e9al Barnab\u00e9<\/a> and Dominique Morisette<\/strong> who had gone back to meet the people and places featured in <a title=\"Radio-Canada archives clip\" href=\"http:\/\/archives.radio-canada.ca\/art_de_vivre\/voyage\/clips\/1972\/\" target=\"_blank\">Radio-Canada\u2019s first ever reportage from Haiti <\/a>(done by the grand dame of Quebec t\u00e9l\u00e9vision journalism, <a title=\"Radio Canada dossiers\" href=\"http:\/\/archives.radio-canada.ca\/arts_culture\/medias\/dossiers\/361\/\" target=\"_blank\">Judith Jasmin<\/a>). <em>Pourquoi Haiti?<\/em> became <a title=\"Tou.tv\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tou.tv\/pourquoi-pas-haiti\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Pourquoi pas Haiti?<\/em><\/a> (Why Not Haiti?) and it was interesting to see that some of today\u2019s key players on the country\u2019s political scene were already active back then.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"PBS Frontline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/us\/?utm_campaign=interiornav&amp;utm_medium=topnav&amp;utm_source=topnav\" target=\"_blank\">Frontline (PBS)<\/a> showed an interesting <a title=\"PBS - Frontline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/battle-for-haiti\/?utm_campaign=homepage&amp;utm_medium=bigimage&amp;utm_source=bigimage\" target=\"_blank\">look at the policing situation in Port-au-Prince<\/a>, <\/strong>where the criminals who escaped the crumbling prisons in the aftermath of the quake have taken refuge in the emergency tent camps where they are rebuilding their gangs and taking control.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>But<\/strong> <strong>the best programs are broadcast on <a title=\"www.tvo.org\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tvo.org\/TVO\/WebObjects\/TVO.woa\" target=\"_blank\">TVO<\/a>: the series <a title=\"InsideDisaster.com\" href=\"http:\/\/insidedisaster.com\/haiti\/\" target=\"_blank\">Inside Disaster<\/a>,<\/strong> directed by <a title=\"Inside Disaster filmmakers\" href=\"http:\/\/insidedisaster.com\/haiti\/the-filmmakers\" target=\"_blank\">Nadine Pequenza and produced by Andrea Nemtin and Ian Dunbar<\/a> at <a title=\"PTV Productions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ptvproductions.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">PTV productions<\/a> in Toronto. I already congratulated them on their sense of initiative <a title=\"Socialdoc.net\" href=\"..\/2010\/01\/21\/inside-disaster-shooting-in-haiti\/\" target=\"_blank\">a year ago<\/a> and <strong>I  am very happy to see that they have really delivered. Nadine Pequenza<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a title=\"Paul Adlaf - sound by Inside Disaster, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/insidedisaster\/4399748064\/\"> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is terrific documentary work, not just news reporting. <strong>We are truly inside the biggest humanitarian relief effort ever, focusing on the Red Cross and some really great characters<\/strong> \u2013<a title=\"Inside Disaster the Characters\" href=\"http:\/\/insidedisaster.com\/haiti\/characters\" target=\"_blank\"> Jean-Pierre Taschereau<\/a> who leads the huge team is just one of them &#8211; as they struggle against overwhelming odds to get water, food and medical help to the victims of the quake. You are really there with them, experiencing their challenges, difficulties and emotions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The shooting and editing are excellent<\/strong>, and <a title=\"Inside Disaster - about\" href=\"http:\/\/insidedisaster.com\/haiti\/about\" target=\"_blank\">the <\/a><a title=\"Inside Disaster - about\" href=\"http:\/\/insidedisaster.com\/haiti\/about\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a> that accompanies the project is exemplary, giving you information about the earthquake, about \u2018humanitarianism\u2019 and emergency relief efforts, and about the film. The companion blog <a title=\"Haiti-today.com\" href=\"http:\/\/haiti-today.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Haiti-today<\/a> goes in depth into the reconstruction effort, and there is also an <a title=\"Insidedisaster-experience\" href=\"http:\/\/www.insidedisaster.com\/experience\/Main.html\" target=\"_blank\">interactive component to the site<\/a>, where you can play the role of a victim, a journalist or a relief worker. I asked Tobi Elliott who helps me with this blog to try it out.
