{"id":1726,"date":"2011-01-31T21:04:20","date_gmt":"2011-02-01T01:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.socialdoc.net\/magnus\/?p=1726"},"modified":"2011-06-03T12:19:59","modified_gmt":"2011-06-03T16:19:59","slug":"salut-ti-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdoc.net\/magnus\/2011\/01\/31\/salut-ti-guy\/","title":{"rendered":"Salut Ti-Guy!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Comm\u00e9moration Guy Tremblay by misacsson, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/12509341@N03\/5404377811\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5015\/5404377811_68fb82f86b.jpg\" alt=\"Comm\u00e9moration Guy Tremblay\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThis past weekend I attended <strong>a memorial service for Guy Tremblay, a sometimes-homeless singer and volunteer worker affectionately known as \u2018Ti-Guy\u2019<\/strong> in the shelters and soup kitchens in downtown Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>The service, at the Notre Dame des Lourdes chapel on St. Catherine street East was warm and unpretentious, marked by the social context of an area that has a lot of marginalized people. The testimonies to Guy were touching, describing him very candidly as a sometimes-manipulative guy with addiction problems, but sensitive, generous and talented.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guy was one of the main characters in my film <a title=\"SocialDoc.net\" href=\"http:\/\/www.socialdoc.net\/isacsson\/2MC1ChoirF.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Les Enfants de Choeur\/The Choir Boys<\/em><\/a>, about Montreal\u2019s homeless choir<\/strong>, La Chorale de <a title=\"Accueil Bonneau\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accueilbonneau.com\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\">l\u2019Accueil Bonneau<\/a>, released about ten years ago. My terrific editor Louise C\u00f4t\u00e9 really liked Guy, and all his good and not-so-good sides were much in evidence in the film. People sometimes ask me \u2013 with a critical tone in their voice \u2013 why I included a scene were Guy, under the influence, pointedly tells me \u201cMagnus, if you film me now I will\u2026\u201d He didn\u2019t say #*$#@#, but it\u2019s clear what he meant. Well, we showed him the fine cut, and he graciously accepted it without requesting any changes.<\/p>\n<p>Guy was 47 when he died, one week after participating in his last concert. <strong>The homeless choir has come back to life, under the name \u2018<a title=\"Le Journal\" href=\"http:\/\/lejournaldequebec.canoe.ca\/journaldequebec\/actualites\/national\/archives\/2010\/12\/20101223-140424.html\" target=\"_blank\">La Chorale sous les \u00e9toiles,<\/a>\u2019 the Choir under the Stars. <\/strong>They sang at the service &#8211; not a funeral, because Ti-Guy had been buried already in his hometown of St. Sim\u00e9on.<\/p>\n<p>The producer of &#8216;Les Enfants de Choeur&#8217;, <a title=\"IMDB\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0487684\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Lapointe<\/a>, as well as the editor <a title=\"IMDB\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0183211\/\" target=\"_blank\">Louise C\u00f4t\u00e9<\/a> and DOP\u2019s <a title=\"NFB\" href=\"http:\/\/www.onf-nfb.gc.ca\/eng\/portraits\/406\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Duckworth<\/a>, <a title=\"LinkedIn\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/andreikhabad\" target=\"_blank\">Andrei Khabad<\/a> and <a title=\"Feuve Jaune\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fleuvejaune.com\/english.html\" target=\"_blank\">Fran\u00e7ois Beauchemin<\/a> join me in saying: <strong>Salut Ti-Guy, you enriched our lives and we are grateful for it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Thanks to <a title=\"Blue Cyrus Media\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bluecyrusmedia.com\" target=\"_blank\">Tobi Elliott<\/a> for her help with this blog. <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past weekend I attended a memorial service for Guy Tremblay, a sometimes-homeless singer and volunteer worker affectionately known as \u2018Ti-Guy\u2019 in the shelters and soup kitchens in downtown Montreal.
