It&#8217;s disappointing however that the one about the abundance of docs at the <a title=\"TIFF\" href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/THEFESTIVAL\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto International Film Festival <\/a>doesn&#8217;t mention any Canadian docs, such as <a title=\"TIFF.net Surviving Progress\" href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/filmsandschedules\/tiff\/2011\/survivingprogress\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Surviving Progress.<\/em><\/a> Maybe one reason is that <a title=\"TIFF festival program\" href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/thefestival\/filmprogramming\/schedule\/day1\" target=\"_blank\">TIFF programs<\/a> very few Canadian docs?<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, enjoy the reading.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"NYT Article 2011\/07\/24\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/07\/24\/movies\/complicated-truths-in-tabloid-and-the-interrupters.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Captivating Films, Complicated Truths<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; the New York Times writer A.O. Scott explores the implications and importance of five new documentaries: <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/person\/103562\/Errol-Morris?inline=nyt-per\" target=\"_blank\">Errol Morris<\/a>\u2019s <em><a title=\"review\" href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/2011\/07\/15\/movies\/tabloid-errol-morriss-take-on-manacled-mormon-review.html?ref=movies\" target=\"_blank\">Tabloid,<\/a><\/em> James Marsh\u2019s <a title=\"review\" href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/2011\/07\/08\/movies\/project-nim-about-a-chimpanzee-subjected-to-research-review.html\"><em>Project Nim<\/em>,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/person\/94214\/Werner-Herzog?inline=nyt-per\">Werner Herzog<\/a>\u2019s <em><a title=\"review\" href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/2011\/04\/29\/movies\/werner-herzogs-cave-of-forgotten-dreams-review.html\">Cave of Forgotten Dreams<\/a>,<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/person\/114771\/John-Turturro?inline=nyt-per\">John Turturro<\/a>\u2019s <em><a title=\"review\" href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/22\/movies\/passione-a-documentary-by-john-turturro-review.html\">Passione <\/a><\/em>and <a title=\"The Interrupters\" href=\"http:\/\/interrupters.kartemquin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Interrupters<\/em><\/a>, Steve James and Alex Kotlowitz\u2019s &#8220;eagerly anticipated, much-admired <a title=\"original article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/05\/04\/magazine\/04health-t.html?scp=1&amp;sq=alex%20kotlowitz%20interrupter&amp;st=cse\">examination of violence<\/a> in Chicago\u2019s poor neighborhoods based on an article Mr. Kotlowitz wrote for The New York Times Magazine.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> <a title=\"NYT article 2011\/09\/06\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/09\/06\/movies\/toronto-festival-documentaries-include-werner-herzog-film.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>A Bounty of Documentaries at Toronto Festival<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; focusing on the documentary offerings at TIFF, but in particular Werner Herzog&#8217;s film <a title=\"Werner Herzog webpage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wernerherzog.com\/index.php?id=67\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Into the Abyss<\/em><\/a>, about the execution of death-row inmate Michael Perry. While editing, &#8220;Herzog said he was too shaken by his encounters with Mr.  Perry, his associates, his pursuers and the family of his victims to  work on the film for more than a few hours each day.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a title=\"Documentary.org\" href=\"http:\/\/www.documentary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Documentary.org<\/a> article <a title=\"Documentary.org\" href=\"http:\/\/www.documentary.org\/news\/three-new-studies-prove-docs-can-change-world\" target=\"_blank\">Three New Studies Prove that Docs can Change the World<\/a> puts the spotlight on three studies analyzing the impacts of the documentary films such as <a title=\"Climate Crisis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecrisis.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>An Inconvenient Truth<\/em><\/a> and <a title=\"Waiting for Superman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.waitingforsuperman.com\/action\/page\/production-about-production\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Waiting for Superman<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"NYTimes Believing is Seeing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/09\/04\/books\/review\/believing-is-seeing-by-errol-morris-book-review.html\" target=\"_blank\">Another NY Times article<\/a> reviews a book by filmmaker Errol Morris, &#8220;Believing is Seeing&#8221; about the limitations of photographs. &#8220;Each of its six chapters originally appeared, in different form, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/01\/03\/it-was-all-started-by-a-mouse-part-1\/\">Opinionator blog<\/a> of The New York Times, and each centers on a photo or photo set: two  slightly different pictures taken by Roger Fenton during the Crimean  War; the infamous Abu Ghraib images, over two chapters; Depression-era  photographs by Walker Evans and Arthur Rothstein; pictures of children\u2019s  toys lying in the rubble after Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon  in 2006; and an ambrotype of three young children that was found  clutched in the hand of a dead Union soldier at Gettysburg in 1863.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Thanks to <a title=\"Blue Cyrus Media\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bluecyrusmedia.com\" target=\"_blank\">Tobi Elliott<\/a> for her help with the blog. <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I can already imagine what my webmestre Kim Gjerstad might say about this post: &#8220;Magnus, I told you, only original material!&#8221; But in my defense, these articles are very interesting, for different reasons.
